Is Organic Food Healthy?

Organic food has become very popular. But navigating the maze of organic food labels, benefits, and claims can be confusing. Is organic food really better for your mental and physical health? Let's find out. The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. While the regulations vary from country to country, organic crops basically mean it must be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides. Organic livestock raised for meat, eggs, and dairy products must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products. Hence in our country, Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation.


A few examples of organic food are Fruits and Vegetables, including Mushrooms, Grains, Legumes, Nuts and Seeds, Dairy Products and Eggs, Livestock Feed, Meats and Poultry. Organic and conventional food must meet the same quality and safety standards. Organic food differs from conventionally produced food simply in the way it is grown, handled and processed. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that it is more nutritious or safer than conventional food.

Organic foods may have higher nutritional value than conventional food, according to some research. The reason: In the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants boost their production of the phytochemicals (vitamins and antioxidants) that strengthen their resistance to bugs and weeds. The most discussed environmental advantage of organic foods is that they don't have any chemical pesticides, but a 2010 study found that some organic pesticides can actually have a worse environmental impact than conventional ones.

Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods. Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Many consumers believe that organic foods have better nutritional value than conventionally grown foods.

Apart from Reduced Exposure to Pesticides and Reduced Exposure to Antibiotics - there is a possible advantage of Reduced Allergies and Obesity. The organic way of living also leads to Better Treatment of Animals. The organic practices are more sustainable than conventional agriculture. For example, organic farmers are free to plant outside the natural season for crops, using heating systems and other practices that eat up a lot of natural resources. So if sustainability really matters to you, consider doing a little extra research to make sure the organic brand you're looking at is as eco-friendly as you think it is.

It almost always costs more than conventionally grown food. That's small wonder when you consider the long list of cost- and production-optimizing practices that are common on conventional farms but aren't allowed on organic farms.
Some farms follow largely organic production practices but haven't actually pursued organic certification, either because they find the letter of the organic standards to be too restrictive or because of the extra costs involved that they don't want to pass on to the consumer.

The impact on the climate from organic farming is reportedly the same with biofuels such as ethanol made from wheat, sugarcane and corn, as well as biodiesel from palm oil, rape-seed and soya.
